WINNERS of our ‘Thinking of You’ card competition

At the beginning of September and to celebrate ‘Thinking of You Week’, we asked the public to come up with something funny, witty or silly to fill in the blank speech bubble on three of our latest cards.

We’re now pleased to announce the three winners, each winning a 10 pack of their winning cards and a £20 Kartoon Faktory voucher!

  • John Graham
  • Sarah Webb
  • William Hill

Well done and congratulations to you all on becoming official Kartoon Faktory greeting card writers!

Each winning card design is now for sale on the Kartoon Faktory website during Thinking of You Week and beyond.

To embrace the spirit of the week, we are not only providing local stamps with every card bought before 25th September, but the proceeds from the sale of these and all greeting cards on the website will be donated to Age Concern Jersey.

It has been a difficult few years for many, both here in Jersey and elsewhere, but Thinking of You Week offers an opportunity to lift the spirits of friends and loved ones.

First launched in 2014, the annual week-long event was introduced with the aim of harnessing the emotional power of cards and encouraging people around the world to send cards to family, friends and others in order to bring joy and happiness.

Cameron McPhail, founder of Kartoon Faktory said: ‘We’re all too aware that the news is currently full of stories about the highest inflation level in decades, food and fuel prices rising, and more and more people than ever struggling financially.’

‘As Kartoon Faktory is a fun brand, we really wanted to use Thinking of You Week to help bring a smile to Islanders – and maybe even a chuckle or two.’

Colouring Day

With 14th September being National Colouring Day in the USA, we thought we’d let you all have a go at de-stressing and colouring in one of our fab cartoons! Don’t forget, colouring isn’t just for kids!

Make sure to set your printer to A4 size and black or greyscale print. We would love to see and share your colouring in so please do email it to us info@kartoonfaktory.com or post it on social media tagging us in it! We’d love to see what you come up with!

The cartoon features a classic KF twist on the famous Jersey Militia, or Royal Militia of the Island of Jersey, who defended against the invading French forces on 6 January 1781. During the American Revolutionary War, these French forces unsuccessfully invaded the British-ruled island of Jersey to remove the threat it posed to French and American shipping however it led to the death of British commander, Major Peirson, whose death was immortalised in the painting by John Singleton Copley ‘The Battle of Jersey’.

In true Kartoon Faktory style, we have created our version entitled ‘Battle of the Jerseys’ and it is available to buy online here on our website as a tea towel, poster or jigsaw!

Thinking of You Card Competition

We have launched a new competition which will help to celebrate ‘Thinking of You Week’ in style.

We want YOU to come up with something funny, witty or silly to fill in the blank speech bubble on three of our latest cards!

Each winning card design will then be for sale on the Kartoon Faktory website during Thinking of You Week, 19-24th September, and beyond. You will officially have become a Kartoon Faktory greeting card writer! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Competition ends 11th September.

Kartoon Faktory, JSPCA & RampArts collab

For those of you who don’t know Jersey, it’s an island of 9 miles by 5 with a population of just over 100k, so basically it can be like living in a big village. Similarly, to village life we like to look out for one another and help wherever we can. So, back in February this year, during a team ideas disco (it should have been a sensible team meeting, but sensible isn’t something that often happens when we’re all together) we decided we wanted to find a local art project where we could brighten up a public space, share our unique humour with our fellow islanders and help a charity to boot.

Now, I won’t bore you with the details of how it happened, but in short, our programme director who rarely misses a thing found a local organisation called RampArts that puts local artists in touch with local charities and organisations to create exciting community-based projects.

The project that was pitched to us was for the cattery at the Jersey Society Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA). This couldn’t have been more perfect, as firstly, we’re all animal crazy so to be honest, they had us at ‘cat’!! Secondly, not sure if you’ve noticed (!) but, Oli the Olistrator (KF’s resident artist) isn’t too shabby when it comes to capturing our four-legged friends in cartoon form, so other than us losing our heads over the furry felines it was a good fit. Thirdly, and this just felt like serendipity, Sam, who is single-handedly our IT department, his mum is the chief vet at the JSPCA; it was a match made in heaven!

The JSPCA needed their cattery area revamped as boarding cats is one of their vital streams and it’s also where they bring members of the public to view cats available for rehoming – so it was important to get this right. Plus, we wanted to make sure the staff had an area they’re proud to work in and show off a bit too.

The cattery area is made up of six wings, with each wing being named after a former furry resident and Oli was asked to create a unique design for each wing. He was given a photo with a short bio of each cat for him to come up with his designs for: Splash, Honey, Star, Sassy, Bo and Phoebe. Below was his first draft…. Amazing or what?

Needless to say, the JSPCA staff loved the designs and Oli got to work a few weeks ago to bring it all to life. Other than underestimating the amount of prep work needed – he is a creative after all darlings – it all went swimmingly (with a bit of help from our equally creative programme director, Carla). The results are just beautiful. Oli just hopes that the current cat residents approve! This project meant a lot to us here at KF and so wanted to share it with you too. Below are some photos of Oli creating his amazing designs along with the finished result. Enjoy!

We’ve been featured all over the place with news of this fantastic colourful makeover, did you spot us in the Jersey Evening Post, on Channel Eye Media or even on the Vibrant Jersey website?

England Women in Euro 2022 Final!

Kartoon Faktory want to wish the Lionesses all the luck in the world for the Euro 2022 final against Germany due to take place at Wembley on Sunday.

The England women have done an incredible job so far scoring 16 goals and conceding just one, including an 8-0 thrashing of Norway.  Safe to say they’re giving Gareth and the boys something to think about with the impending men’s World Cup finals coming up later this year – no pressure lads!

The girls haven’t had it all easy though, they took out the bookie’s favourites, Sweden, in the semi-finals earlier this week and had a run for their money against Spain in the quarterfinals, where they dropped their only goal of the finals so far. Impressive stuff ladies!

Now we get to face eight-time European champions Germany in the final at Wembley, but is this going to our 1966?  Is women’s football going to ‘bring it home’ for England after 56 years?  Let’s face it, it’s going to be tough.  Germany’s captain, Alexandra Popp equalled Beth Meads 6 goals of the tournament in the game against France meaning they are both going to be also battling to win the golden boot this Sunday.  Oh, did we mention Germany have won the competition eight times?!  However, there is a glint of light at the end of the tunnel, according to the Telegraph journalist Tom Garry, who specialises in reporting on women’s football, he believes that Germany are the under-dogs going into Sunday’s final.  That’s got to count for something, right??

Given England’s history of penalty taking at major tournament, we thought it only fair to look at the stats.  Interestingly, or not, depending on your point of view and how much of a stat geek you are, England’s women penalty shoot-out stats are just behind that of the men, being 73.65% successfully scored compared to 75.57% respectively.  So basically, what women’s coach, Sarina Weigman, appears to be doing is simply (simply…chuckle!) coaching England’s women to just win our matches and ensure that England fans still have fingernails, by not letting us sit through unnecessary penalty shoot outs – so far at least.

This seemingly straightforward tactic (I think even the calm and imperturbable Gareth Southgate, may get a teensy bit cross with this part of our analysis) will be even more psychologically important for Sunday’s match, as any England footie fan will testify to our lack of penalty success against ‘The Motherland’.  But, who in their right mind wouldn’t want an England v Germany final – apart from France or Sweden perhaps, but does their opinion really matter?  No.  Why? Because it’s not their blog…

I will leave you with one last important fact, which is we now have solid proof that women’s football is finally breaking through.  Is it by viewing figures, social media chat or ticket demand for games?  No, it’s the influence the Dutch coach is having on fans fashion.  Yup that’s right, Sarina is doing for women’s trouser suits what Gareth did for the waistcoat.  It is reported that sales of nylon trouser suits are up by 140%…..now, what could shout the success of women’s football more than that!

Good luck ladies, everyone at Kartoon Faktory will be cheering for you!

Wimbledon is Back!

Can you feel the excitement in the air? It’s time for Wimbledon!

We followed the Murray’s games in particular, and while Andy Murray is unfortunately already been knocked out he put up a great fight!

After a little bit of a shaky start to his game against James Duckworth on Monday, he managed to set up for a convincing win in the later sets proving that Dunblane is still more than competitive against Australia! Unfortunately for all us Murray fanatics he wasn’t able to continue this performance in his game against John Isner which ended his Wimbledon run this year.

Jamie Murray fared slightly better in the Men’s Doubles, winning two games and making it to the the third round while sharing the court with Bruno Soares. The pair seemed particularly dominant up until their third game making the defeat all the more disappointing, but they put on some stellar games for us viewers at home!

We love the Murrays here at Kartoon Faktory, and we’ve even put together an entire collection of products solely dedicated to the famous tennis family! Even better, all proceeds from these products go directly to the Murray Play Foundation, a charity founded by Judy Murray with the aim to take tennis into rural and disadvantaged areas across Scotland.

Roaming Charges

We’ve just seen that most UK mobile operators aren’t going to bring back roaming charges the re-introduction of which, you may remember, were used as a part of the argument for the Remain Brexit campaign (sorry to bring up the dirty six letter word!).

Despite being allowed to start charging from Jan 2021, those that are going to ask customers to pay (albeit small amounts) haven’t brought the charges in until this year, kindly extending free roaming throughout lock down. No wonder people were cross about not being able to get away on their hols!

To our UK friends, spare a thought for us Jersey folk. Whilst locked down on our little island of nine miles by five, being so close to France we didn’t even get to escape roaming charges, we just need to go for a walk on the north coast! 😆
